An asylum-seeker, a gambler and a lawyer walk into a theatre. Brace yourself. For three weeks during October, the Tap Gallery hosts Tony Laumberg’s latest masterpiece.

The Good, The Bad and The Lawyer promises audiences a night of havoc and hilarity.

Following the life of Laumberg’s favourite repeat character, Henry Crowley, the play depicts the tale of his latest drama while pushing all the right buttons and tickling all the right fancies.

“What’s happened to this country when a man can’t even control who lives in his own house?” exclaims Crowley.

When the Mrs announces their new house guest is to be an Iranian refugee fresh off the boat from Indonesia, Crowley’s life undergoes a drastic change of pace. The arrival of his problem-gambler cousin and the appearance of a nosy journalist just adds fuel to the flame. Or more accurately, kerosene to Crowley’s already raging inferno.

Actor Geoff Sirmai (who plays Ahmed, the cheeky Iranian refugee) describes his character as a cross between Woody Allen and Harpo Marx, with a persian accent.

When asked about Laumberg’s comedic style, Sirmai explains that “either people love his work or he just hasn’t offended them enough yet”.

Described as “buzzing, bumbling and bombastic”, there isn’t an excuse to miss it. (TO)
