Stories We Tell is a Canadian documentary film by acclaimed writer/director Sarah Polley. The story follows the life of Polley’s mother, Diane – an actress, wife, and all-round whirlwind of a personality.

Described by one of Diane’s friends as “so far outside of herself, that sometimes there was nothing inside”, Diane lived life by the seat of her pants. Marrying Polley’s father, the polar opposite of her, was perhaps one of the best and worst things Diane ever did.

Funny, touching and tragic, the story of Diane’s life is based on interviews with those that knew her best – friends, family, lovers. Diane died when Polley was young and this film is in many ways a search for an explanation of who she was. (LG)
