QUAY TO THE CITY

QUAY TO THE CITY

Curated by Janice Muller, the Australian Theatre for Young People (atyp) celebrate their fiftieth anniversary by inviting you to attend a walking tour of theatrical performances in historical locations along The Rocks.

Juxtaposed against the contemporary architecture of the Harbour, these talented young actors pay homage to Sydney’s colourful nineteenth century past. It’s a past we often forget about, when the Rocks were inhabited by wharfies, freed convicts, and the infamous gang the Miller’s Point Push, who terrorised The Rocks for two decades from the 1870s.

Participants need to be fit for this one as the larrikins run you through their old stomping ground where they robbed and assaulted civilians and police. This is a poignant and well-orchestrated window into the early days of colonial history. As audiences navigate through haunted alleyways, cobbled streets, and nineteenth century houses, the performances evoke a true sense of the intriguing past which is too often hidden by the modern-day landscape of The Rocks.

Until Oct 5, atyp pop-up box office, 140 George St, Sydney, $15-25, NB this is a walking/climbing/exploring tour, 9270 2400, atyp.com.au
