With its juxtaposition of organic and inorganic elements, the work of Melbourne-based artist Louise Weaver straddles the traditional and the modern, combining to create an individual and unique style. Night Repair is her tenth solo exhibition with the Darren Knight Gallery, which includes six ink on paper works; three new sculptures cast variously in bronze, resin and beeswax; and eight wall relief works.

Some works are obviously identifiable as a painting or a candle, while others aren’t recognisable as anything in particular, but are suggestive: an incomplete skeleton, something washed up on a beach, an Indigenous work of art.

The effect ranges from tribal, to aesthetically pleasing, to challenging, to thought provoking.

“These works have ‘arrived’ rather than been constructed,” explains Weaver.

“They have come into being through intuition, experimentation and play – a response to material and matter. They express urgency and delight in the process of ‘making’, a spontaneous revelling in anticipation of ‘what may be’.”

Weaver’s work is held in numerous prestigious collections including the British Museum, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Queensland Art Gallery, and the Museum of Contemporary Art here in Sydney – Night Repair presents an opportunity to see her work up close in a local neighbourhood gallery, and chat with the knowledgeable staff about her acclaimed work.
