PPP warning on WestConnex

Revelations that the Cross City Tunnel is again on the verge of receivership shows the public-private partnership (PPP) model for building infrastructure is flawed and should not be used for the proposed WestConnex Motorway, according to NSW Greens Transport Spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC. Dr Faruqi said: “Despite all the deep flaws in the public-private road model, which allows business interests to trump the public good, successive Labor and Coalition governments have learned almost nothing from numerous unsuccessful and exorbitantly expensive projects.” Dr Faruqi called on the NSW government to seriously reconsider the WestConnex proposal. “Once building starts, it’s difficult to turn back. We need to redirect public money to public transport now.”

Greenwich petitions Premier on casino

State Member for Sydney Alex Greenwich has called on NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell to ensure the proposed Crown casino at Barangaroo is built on land already approved for development, if it proceeds, and not on parkland. In a letter to Mr O’Farrell, Mr Greenwich said: “I share widespread concern that Crown’s proposal for a casino at Barangaroo south is on land dedicated in the approved concept plan for public open space.” Mr Greenwich said changes to the approved concept plan must be subject to transparent, accountable review under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.

Snail trails for Sydney

Giant snails are set to invade locations such as Hyde Park, Martin Place and Customs House Square in the name of public art. The Snailovation exhibit, part of this year’s Art & About festival, will see 24 gigantic neon-coloured snails installed in some of Sydney’s most iconic spaces for a month from September 20. “These giant snails will bring a sense of fun, culture and creativity to our city,” said Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore.
