Lovelace is a low-budget biographical drama about infamous porn queen Linda Lovelace who starred in Deep Throat, the first scripted adult movie phenomenon which allegedly inspired the sexual revolution of the 1970s.
Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried) escaped her strict religious upbringing only to marry hustler Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard) who introduced her into the seedy world of pornography. Physically and mentally abusive, he later coerced her into prostitution at gun point.
Seyfried delivers a powerful performance in this sexually explicit film which is camp and contrived at times. Most characters are clichéd and seem cartoonish.
Lovelace is insightful and explores a porn star’s tortured world, her plight to escape pornography, the horrors of domestic violence, her desperation to take control of her life and the suffocating need for redemption. (MM)
