The years have not been kind to indie rocker Grant Hart. His obscure solo work has never managed to garner the response that would have once been afforded him during his Hüsker Dü days and The Argument won’t buck the trend.
Based on an unpublished sci-fi manuscript by legendary author William S. Burroughs (which was itself based on John Milton’s Paradise Lost), the album is intriguing.
Hart’s wobbly vocals, the loose drum beats, pattern changes and the operatic style bring to mind the work of David Bowie. Ironically, it winds up sounding a little dated (think War of the Worlds) but if you can sit it out there is some gold. (NH)
