GARBAGE GUTS – GREG SHAPLEY

GARBAGE GUTS – GREG SHAPLEY

Greg Shapley’s exhibition takes the ubiquitous pigeon and transforms it into a wondrous digital rainbow.

Garbage Guts concentrates on images of urban decay and illustrates the fast-paced city lifestyle with pictures of blurred landmarks such as service stations.

However, it is the pigeons that star. In the front room, photos of the denizens of grotty lanes and pathways are encapsulated in blocks. The creatures peer innocently at the camera, unknowing representatives of a society of discard and disorder.

In the Speck of Pigeon’s Eye series, these pictures are transformed into dazzling animated displays of light and colour. By intensely focusing on the pigeon’s eye, Shapley has produced a series that entices the viewer. The metallic prints shine like multihued strands of DNA double helix, and illustrate the beauty which dwells within the most ordinary facets of city life. (LR)
