EQUUS

Celebrating 40 years since its debut in London (then starring Anthony Hopkins, Richard Burton and Anthony Perkins), Peter Schaffer’s Equus is coming to Sydney as part of the Sydney Fringe thanks to new independent Sydney production house Nomadic Artists. Featuring Martin Portus and Michael Brindley, this show is said to be one of the greatest British plays.

The story centres on young man, Alan Strang, who brutally blinds six horses and the psychiatrist, Martin Dysart who examines him and this gruesome crime.

Producer Elliott Marsh says, “The play is based on real life events [a young man blinded a stable of horses with a metal spike]. Universal themes such as youth in society, coming of age, the media and its effect on society, religion, sex, crime, mental illness, parental influence on children and the question of ‘what is normal’, resonates in some aspects within all of us and transcends cultural boundaries.”

Marsh continues, “40 years on, the play keeps reminding of the ‘disability’ in all of us to be whole, present and conscious of our humanity. Our vulnerability.” (LK)
