CUB SPORT

CUB SPORT

If you thought being ordered by Scouts Australia to change their band name would slow this group of indie-rockers down, think again. Cub Sport have said farewell to Cub Scouts and hello to a killer new EP and an Australia-wide tour.

Off the back of a successful 2012, both nationally and internationally, and with a growing and loyal fan base, the Cubs, featuring lead vocalist and pianist Tim Nelson, back-up and keys Sam Netterfield, bassist Zoe Davis, drummer Daniel Puusaari and guitarist Andy Williams, are looking to introduce their fresh music to the world.

Formed in 2011 at the hands of Nelson who no longer wanted to perform as a solo act, Cub Sport are now in their third year of making music together.

So, were they actual Scouts? Not exactly.

“After one of our first shows, we were all wearing neck ties,” says Nelson.

“We used to dress pretty stupidly – and we all looked like Cub Scouts. When it came time to release a single, the name just worked.”

Unfortunately, it seems Scouts Australia didn’t agree and recently requested officially that the band change their name. No loss of morale here though, Cub Sport have risen from the proverbial campfire ashes and continued in full force with their latest EP.

Produced by John Castle, the Paradise EP is indie summertime pop at its best; starting with the energetic, harmonious title single and followed by a colorful repertoire of impressive tunes. Melding addictive melodies with honest, sometimes tongue-in-cheek lyrics, Cub Sport are indie audience favourites.

“I’m inspired by lots of different things,” says Nelson.

“My friends, I’ve written songs about my pets, sometimes strangers; I guess I’m inspired by strange things.”

The Paradise Tour starts in Queensland and will take the Cubs to every state and major city.

“America and the UK are also on the cards, it will be great to get over there,” says Nelson.

After that there will be little rest for these kids, with an album in the works aiming for release in 2014, Cub Sport are on a roll.

“I’m really enjoying the new songs. We’re just going to keep writing and we’ll keep recording and make sure we put the best selection on the album.” (TW)
