TOUGH BEAUTY

Not just a play but a social statement, Tough Beauty identifies the change in female bullying in a way that might shock audiences, but will have them nodding their heads in agreement.

“The change I’m trying to highlight is the physical component of violence that girls are choosing to take on. Once, the most we would see girls do in terms of viciousness was spreading rumours or isolating girls from other girls,” explains director and co-creator Claudia Chidiac.

Very careful not to make a statement without doing so genuinely, Chidiac has done her homework.

“Since 2011, young people have been involved in every level of the consultation process; from the research and development phase, to when we’ve held public readings and even more recently they’ve been involved in creating the video content as well as music for the production,” says Chidiac

Tough Beauty is a production that makes its point with the very timely depiction of physical violence amongst young women.

“It’s not a puff piece. It’s not a moralistic play. More often than not adults make the mistake of speaking on behalf of young people. Adults are in a very privileged position because we have hindsight and time,” says Chidiac. (AH)
