Stephen Lynch doesn’t shy away from being daring, controversial and downright hilarious. In a distinctive fusion of music and comedy he delivers songs about varied trite and taboo topics, including ugly babies, fat friends and queer tattoos.

Lynch’s musical history was initially more traditional – he took piano lessons as a kid and he was influenced by his father, a singer in a 60’s folk group who was a Latin and Greek scholar, so linguistics, etymology and grammar were important at home.

“Many of the family games we played revolved around word-play and puns. I’m sure that love of language is apparent in the dick jokes that I now write,” he says.

Lynch had no designs on becoming a comedian in the traditional sense, saying, “he wanted to be an actor with a capital A”.

Comedy was just a lucky accident when Lynch moved to New York in 1996 and began writing comedic songs to perform in underground clubs. This eventually captured the attention of television channel Comedy Central, who asked him to record his first special.

With his reputation as a performer continuing to grow, Lynch is returning to Australia for a second tour. He will play songs from new album, Lion, favourites from old albums and a few works-in-progress.

“There will be some audience participation – until some drunken asshole takes it too far and I have to have him removed.” (MP)
