New Shanghai

New Shanghai

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but if the generic nature of Sydney’s café menus is anything to go by, it can be a bit, well – boring.  Breakfast at the original New Shanghai outlet in Lemon Grove Plaza should ease any tedium. We’re all down with yum cha, so the breakfast dumpling isn’t a stranger. I rate the Steamed Pork Bun ($2) and Steamed Vegetarian Bun ($2) as ripper ways to start any day. Congee ($2) takes things up to the next level, but should be familiar to those who enjoy a breakfast buffet in an international standard hotel. It’s basically savoury porridge, best in versions with flavours, like Preserved Egg and Lean Meat ($4.50). I’m sure you’re down with the shallot pancake, and thus don’t need to be told the Fried Egg Pancake with Pork Floss ($4.50) or Cheese ($4.50) will have everyone reaching for another piece. However Savoury Soy Bean Milk ($4.50) might be another matter  – I found it easy to eat and pleasantly tart like cultured yoghurt – my dining companion, not so much. The Savoury Deep Fried Dough Fritter ($3) is a doughnut without the sweet – what’s not to like with a pot of health-giving green tea?
