LA TRAVIATA

LA TRAVIATA

Emma Matthews provides perhaps her best performance yet in Elijah Moshinsky’s production of Giuseppe Verdi’s classic, La Traviata.

The Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave follows Violetta Valèry (Emma Matthews) upon her return to Paris in 1877 following treatment for tuberculosis. During her time away, Violetta has captured the attention of a suitor, Alfredo Germont (Arnold Rutkowski).

Onstage chemistry between Matthews and Rutkowski is extraordinary, the pair perform the aria Libiamo ne’ lieti calici beautifully together, leaving the audience humming during the interval.

The later introduction of Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont (Jose Carbo) provides an opportunity for Matthews to be challenged. Carbo dominates vocally in the later acts, providing an emotionally captivating performance.

A harmonious orchestra and energetic conductor, Patrick Lange, audibly conveys the emotion of Violetta, complementing the vocal and acting talent of Matthews.

Costumes and sets are extravagantly detailed, providing a feast for the eyes. (LD)
