EMBARK

There is a special kind of honesty about Nic Cassey, the singer/songwriter come artist is usually described as enigmatic. This title however, may be a sad reflection on the world we live in.

“I’m not very good with words,” he says while describing his work. Cassey then goes into very simple step by step instructions of how he constructs his bark lanterns.

“My work is in the bush, it’s everywhere though. I’m just trying to make objects that are nice to have around,” he says.

This quirky young man embodies the spirit of the artist. He is shy and reluctant to indulge in details. Talking to him is like trying to interview a young Bob Dylan at the peak of his success. Likewise, there is a contrast of subtly and striking beauty in his work, both his music and sculpture have a quality that captivates audiences without realising it.

“The lanterns are for my friends,” he says. “I’d like to give my friends some beauty, and it brings us so much joy.

“I’m trying to make beautiful things. I guess that’s the truth in it,” continues Cassey.

“It’ll just say what it’s gotta say without saying anything, if that makes sense?” (LC)
