Beyond The Hills follows Alina (Cristina Flutur) who returns to Romania from Germany to re-unite with the only person she has ever loved – Voichita (Cosmina Stratan). They met as orphanage children but now Voichita is a nun and God is not easy to compete with.
Set in a remote Romanian monastery, the nuns conclude that Alina is possessed by the devil. They attempt to exorcise her but it doesn’t work as they’d hoped.
Beyond The Hills will keep viewers hooked, building to a horrifying crescendo. Its subtleties result in a very detailed and fascinating reflection of the nun’s lives and motivations. Freewill, religion and love are predominant themes.
Partly shot in a documentary style, the camera often seems like an extra character, watching without judgment. This is interesting considering the movie is encouraging viewers to form strong opinions. (LK)
