“Well well well, oh well”, the strains of one of John Lennon’s most famous anthems resounds in 25 different intonations, echoing through the cavernous Anna Schwartz gallery in Candice Breitz’s astounding exhibition Working Class Hero.

Each voice emerges from a video face framed in black. The tune changes from ballad to chant charting the emotional roller coaster that is Lennon’s first solo album, and the visages reflect that emotion.

They plead and strive for the top notes, scream the lyrics, hum the words gently, cry softly and sway to the beat of unheard tunes. It is a capella, a chorus without music but the bells herald the opening.

This exhibition is a testament to the unique effect of song, it comments on the legendary status of the ex-Beatle and his influence on the every man.

Alternatively pensive, defiant and inspiring, Working Class hero is a profoundly moving experience. (LR)
