THE WAY, WAY BACK

THE WAY, WAY BACK

The Way, Way Back tells the story of Duncan (Liam James), an introverted 14-year-old who’s forced to spend summer vacation with his aloof mother (Toni Collette), her condescending boyfriend (Steve Carell) and his snotty daughter. Fortunately, Duncan finds an unlikely ally and mentor in Owen (Sam Rockwell), the affable slacker who runs the local water park.

Despite treading familiar territory, the directorial debut of screenwriters Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (The Descendants) is a bittersweet coming-of-age flick that tugs at the heart strings and pulls at the funny bone.

Credit to the film’s strong ensemble cast – newcomer James not only conveys maturity beyond his years, but perfectly captures the awkwardness of adolescence. Critically, he has a great rapport with Rockwell who spouts droll quips and steals nearly every scene he’s in.

Charming, funny and occasionally painful, The Way, Way Back is an authentic take on growing up. (JH)
