THE JADED VANITIES BURLESQUE

THE JADED VANITIES BURLESQUE

If Marilyn Manson and Dita Von Teese had lasted long enough to have a baby, this would be it. Leather, chains, gothic makeup and a general disdain for clothing are the cornerstones of Russall S. Beattie’s brilliant burlesque show, which favours dark sounds and melodramatic lighting over the fans and feathers of its traditional counterpart.

Hosted by a charmingly quirky masked gentleman with ever-changing glass eyes and a rubber mouth, the show is part-comedy, part-interactive and always awe-inspiring. The performers bring a sense of fierceness with everything, from their elegant twists and turns, to their intense costumes and stony expressions.

With musical pieces ranging from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Gil Scott-Heron and Nine Inch Nails, the dancers provide an eclectic and varied series of performances. This is not a strip show, but rather a powerful visual art form we don’t witness very often.

The quality dips during the show’s second half, but nonetheless this is worth watching from start to finish. Grab a drink, sit back, and warm up the vocal chords to cheer your lungs out. (GF)
