“Today we are cancelling the apocalypse!”

Pacific Rim sees mankind (once again) called upon to make a final stand, as enormous dimension-travelling monsters called “Kaiju” emerge from a crevasse in the Pacific Ocean and start wrecking up the joint. Earth’s only hope: equally large robots, “Jaegers”, which are controlled by two pilots in a mind-meld.

The robots are cool and there are some impressive looking set pieces, but there was hope director Guillermo del Toro might bring a little more interest to this. The emotional highpoint is a brief farewell between a man and a dog.

Blockbuster films these days have a lot of boxes to tick – Pacific Rim ticks them all and then ends. At least it’s original material. (AB)
