Patsy Chingwile’s paintings shimmer off the walls of the Verge Gallery in a kaleidoscope of colours and subtle geometrical designs. Many were produced after the artist suffered a severe illness and their radiance is a celebration of life.

Stylistically the works are influenced by Picasso, Matisse and Bonnard. The cubist impact is apparent in the detached facial features and the startling shades are reminiscent of the modern movement. The self portraits feature elliptical eyes which skewer the viewer and ruby red lips which dance across faces of multi-coloured hues.

Substantively Chingwile cites the inspiration of Iyengar yoga, Qigong and Buddhist philosophy. The result is a unique mixture of western and eastern tradition. This is most evident in the striking portrayal of the Indian goddess, Lakshmi.

Unique reflections of the inner self, these creations are objects of great beauty and power which ask a multitude of questions about truth and the personal journey. (LR)
