THE GROWL – WHAT WOULD CHRIST DO?

Cam Avery is a busy man. Along with drumming for Pond, he’s just replaced Nick Allbrook (also from Pond) as bassist for Australia’s psychedelic rockers, Tame Impala. This year, he’s also introduced his own project, The Growl – a soulful, aggressive exploration of love and loss. Ridden with religious symbolism, What Would Christ Do? is an apt name.

The tracks feature heavy, stomping percussion and gritty vocals you’d expect to accompany scenes from a saloon in the Old West. With a feeling of reckless abandon, the rhythms have been written to make you move. The blend of hollow drums, mean guitars and Avery’s growling (no pun intended) is something that will translate wonderfully on stage. (SY)
