MONSTERS UNIVERSITY

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY

Not even animations are safe from the Hollywood prequel-sequel-pumping machine. Thankfully Monsters University is a funny, colourful and original compliment to Pixar’s 2001 hit, Monsters Inc.

The old cast are back, with some amusing new characters, as the story explores how best friends Sulley (John Goodman) and Mike (Billy Crystal) met during their time at M.U.

Pixar always have something for everyone and refreshingly the jokes are clever and universal without relying on toilet humour for a chuckle.

The message that everyone should celebrate their strengths and individuality is subtle enough to sink in with the kids, but avoids punching adults in the face.

Using the 3D effect in animations is also becoming more self-assured and less “look at me” as time wears on. It is hardly noticeable in this case but has a markedly positive effect on the quality of the film. (LL)
