The new parking system to be introduced at Bronte Cutting Car Park in December has been endorsed as cheaper and more efficient.

Waverley Council have made a series of amendments, introducing 10 new parking meters to the car park and the removal of existing infrastructure, including the gates at the entry and exit.

Currently, visitors are met by a manned booth with a boom gate. Under the changes, patrons are to pay for unlimited hourly parking at $3.50 per hour, capped at $15.

Liberal Councillor Angela Burrill, who moved the amendments, said the current system is inefficient. She made the changes in response to residential concerns about time limits. “[The current system] is very costly to ratepayers and Council,” said Ms Burrill.

“The current car park … you can drive in and park, pay $15 and you can park there all day. There’s no time restriction. That’s going to remain the same, except now you’ve got the added benefit to park by the hour.”

Changes include a time-unlimited parking system that will be trialled for a year, while fees will be charged to non-beach permit holders.

Labor Councillor John Wakefield said changes to the original proposal were so significant that the financial analysis of the changes were “no longer valid”.

“They’re doing things without proper knowledge of what the consequences will be,” he said.
