CHRISTINE ANU – THE ARETHA FRANKLIN SONGBOOK TOUR

In a career spanning two decades, Christine Anu has done it all – music, theatre, dance, film, TV and children’s entertainment – so why Aretha Franklin? “Because she is the queen of soul,” laughs Anu, “and there is no style she cannot do.”

Following last year’s release of Rewind – The Aretha Franklin Songbook to rave reviews, Christine Anu has extended her national tour. This time it’s more stripped back and intimate. “I wanted people to feel that I was performing in their living room,” explains Anu.

Covering classics like Respect, Chain of Fools and Natural Woman – is there any hint of overawe? “It was intimidating because no one touches Aretha but I have worked hard at putting my own signature on these songs,” says Anu, “I think her music gave me permission to be the singer I always wanted to be.” (GW)
