ANTARCTIC WHALE WARRIORS

It is the world’s last great wilderness, expansive, desolate and yet full of some of nature’s most impressive life. Sadly, despite the Antarctic being widely uninhabited by man, the wildlife there are in need of protection from them.

Enter Sea Shepherd’s ship, the Bob Barker, a vessel with 120 volunteer marine activists from 25 countries on-board whose aim it is to save the lives of whales that are illegally killed in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary.

Sea Shepherd is a non-profit conservation organisation whose mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans.

Antarctic Whale Warriors by photojournalist Glenn Lockitch portrays the strategic, dangerous and courageous fight by these marine activists on their ninth anti-whaling defence campaign – Operation Zero Tolerance.

Displayed as part of the Head On Photo Festival the exhibition reflects the 110 days that Lockitch was official photographer, documenting Operation Zero Tolerance.

Lockitch traversed 25,000 kilometres aboard the Bob Barker, being rammed and hosed to document a campaign that saw some of the worst hostilities experienced by Sea Shepherd.

This is an important and eye-opening exhibit full of emotive images. (LL)
