TRANSLATIONS: A SYDNEY-SACRAMENTO EXCHANGE

Translations at Sydney University’s Verge Gallery is a comment on globalisation and cross cultural interaction. The exhibition is based upon an exchange of ideas with the Verge Gallery in Sacramento California.

Artists from the US institution sent instructions to their Australian counterparts who created artworks based upon the messages. The results are an eclectic mix of playful mixed media pieces.

Artist Jonathon McBurnie collaborated with Cherilyn Naugton to produce Approaches for Reconciling Duality. McBurnie produced mirrored drawings which were inspired by the automatic works of Dieter Roth.

Katie Thomas was asked to select a tree, dead or alive, and document it. Her creation, The One Tree Project, uses contrasting materials to portray personal conflict.

Transportrait by Jason Christopher combines visual images with a robotic figure whilst Vilma Bader’s Culturally Bound Syndrome is a metaphorical depiction of the struggle of people suffering from psychological disorders.

The collection reflects student concerns and aspirations and is suitably housed at the Verge Gallery in the heart of the University. It is a shrewd statement on art, contemporary life and digital communication. (LR)
