THE GREAT GATSBY

THE GREAT GATSBY

Baz Luhrmann’s ultra-hyped, long-awaited take on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic 1920’s novel The Great Gatsby has finally arrived. Heading the cast is Leonardo DiCaprio who plays the mysterious and shady Jay Gatsby with Tobey Maguire as his only friend Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as the beautiful Daisy who is married yet tragically in love with Gatsby.

Lavish, colourful and beautifully filmed, the exhilarating party sequences, incredible visuals and costumes recreate the era. A modern Soundtrack with artists including Jay-Z and Beyonce will draw young filmgoers. Negatively it lacks substance and the lengthy running time (143 minutes) makes it laborious, erasing the magic created in the earlier dazzling party scenes.

The Great Gatsby is not a ‘great’ film, but audiences worldwide will warmly embrace it. (MM)
