TELEGRAPH TOWER – CONCUBINE
A melodic and intriguing effort, Concubine by Sydney-duo Telegraph Tower can be thought of as a less dreamy cousin of Jose Gonzales’ Veneer. Vocalist Barnaby Smith heralds a smooth, contemplative voice, at times akin to that of Morrissey, which just washes over like a steaming hot shower on a cold winters day.
The poetic lyricism accompanied by the melancholic tones of Oliver Downes’ cello works in perfect synchronism to create a sense of realism and disconcertment, with the second track Mistress marrying these two elements to create the ultimate standout track.
It’s a solid and likeable EP that can only mean there are greater things to come. (CD)
