COVERGIRL

Judy Garland came back from the dead to offer a hilarious rendition of the Spice Girls’ Spice Up Your Life – a sentence that doesn’t make sense unless you’ve experienced a fabulous Slide Lounge Covergirl show.

The performers of this tribute to all things Spice are from wildly different walks of life, much like the assigned personalities of the original famous five. From musical theatre star Tom Sharah to sultry songstress Catherine Alcorn, ABC newsreader Whitney Fitzsimmons, Olympic Gold Medallist Matthew Mitcham and of course, the incomparable Miss Garland (Sheridan Harbridge).

Each artist brought their own style to a range of the Spice Girls’ well-known hits, “when you strip back the shit, there are actually good songs under there,” explains Sharah before launching into a jumping rendition of Say You’ll Be There with his brother accompanying on acoustic guitar. Fitzsimmons offered up a sexy lounge-inspired Who Do You Think You Are and Mitcham, bless his cotton socks, took them off as he stripped to his speedos while singing Stop.

The ‘variety hour roast’ format of the Covergirl series is original and inventive and something Slide Lounge will continue with producer Jeremy Brennan’s next instalment – an ode to all things Britney.

A walk down musical memory lane and a meal, what more could you ask for? (LL)
