VANGUARD

Leave all preconceptions behind, you will find no tutus or tiaras in this contemporary ballet spectacular.

Combining three milestone performances from different points of history; including The Four Temperaments by George Balanchine, Bella Figura by Jirí Kylián, and Dyad 1929 by Wayne McGregor; Vanguard is what Artistic Director David McAllister deems as “an anthology of ballet”.

“You get to see the evolution of what has happened between 1946 through to 2009,” explains McAllister.

“I like to put a program together that has a deeper meaning, and I feel like each of these choreographers in their time really changed the direction for ballet.”

With the first showcase due to be unveiled next week, McAllister is sure that the award-winning music and astounding routines will resonate deeply with all those self-confessed virgins of professional ballet.

“The athleticism of the dancers is fascinating. If you love seeing people doing extraordinary feats physically then you will love it,” he says.

“It’s like extreme ballet: you take all of that wonderful technique from ballet school and you pump it full of adrenaline.” (CD)
