Soirée

Proving that themes don’t have to be tacky, an Addams Family High Tea ($59/head) at the newly refurbished Soirée was quite an adventure. Even before entering the refitted 60s style lounge bar through (temporary) wrought iron gates, I marvelled to see black roses in poison bottles adorning tables in the stylish lobby. They’re taking their arts partnership very seriously, and it pays off nicely with hanging black birdcages and other quirky décor items keeping you amused until the great unveiling. Eschewing the thematic cocktails for a glass of Taittinger Champagne, I tackled the savoury tier first, enjoying freshly made sandwiches and an airy standout muffin. A deep red virgin bloody Mary jelly paved my way into the thematic items, all produced to the usual Sofitel Wentworth standard. Visually I’m won over by the hairy Cousin It jelly and severed finger topped scone (it’s actually a tasty butter shortbread); but my tastebuds were most impressed by a simple lemon tart. At the waiter’s suggestion I took my sweets with Rose Hip Delight, a gentle, affable tea that even seemed to convert my non-tea-drinking companion. Since this high tea only runs until the 30th April, you’ll have to lurch in quickly (between 2pm and 5pm) to get yours.
