NOËL AND GERTIE

NOËL AND GERTIE

With the upcoming film release of The Great Gatsby, 1920s glamour is back in vogue. Few people epitomised the glamour of that period more than the darlings of stage and screen Noël Coward and Gertrude (Gertie) Lawrence.

Including all-singing and dancing performances by the talented James Millar (Oklahoma, Jerry Springer: The Opera) and Lucy Maunder (Dr Zhivago, The Rocky Horror Show), this Glen Street Theatre production is set to come alive under the direction of stage legend Nancye Hayes.

A fan of Noël Coward’s since she was introduced to his work by her father as a little girl, actress Lucy Maunder finds the pairing of the prolific and much-loved Noël and Gertie fascinating. “I think they knew once they met, that both of them complimented each other in such a way that he wrote for her and she created roles onstage for him. That catapulted them into epic stardom,” she says, “they had this wonderful rapport.”

“It’s going to be a really great show. It’s a hilarious script,” says Maunder. “It has a sophisticated, quick-witted, acid-like tone to it. It’s brilliant.” (KM)
