BIRDS WITH SKY MIRRORS

BIRDS WITH SKY MIRRORS

Distinguished Samoan choreographer Lemi Ponifasio and his internationally acclaimed contemporary New Zealand-based dance company MAU will perform the Australian debut of Birds with Skymirrors at Carriageworks.

“This is a poignant work blending traditional practices with contemporary dance that explores the important issue of displacement in the Pacific because of Global Warming,” says Carriageworks Director Lisa Havilah.

The urging and uplifting dance work incorporates dance, ceremony, poetry and chant and was inspired by migrating birds on the Pacific Island of Tarawa carrying strips of black magnetic tape in their mouths which glinted and looked like liquid mirrors reflecting the sky.

Birds with Skymirrors is a multi-layer work, reflecting on the human relationship with the planet and highlights the plight of people living in the low-lying islands of the Pacific who are affected by rising sea levels and ocean pollution.

Evocative lighting design, video projections and sound design combine to create an austere and mystical world as the performers convey the urgent message that radical climate change is already here. (CN)
