ASSORTED TREATS

The whisky drinker, the cherry nose and the red eye: not a list of likely lurkers at art openings but rather just a tiny fraction of the wide and varied cicada species in Australia.

Cicada Press, an offshoot of the College of Fine Arts, UNSW, was created by director and artist Michael Kempson to capture the similarly wide variety of print-based forms practised by its students, alumni and friends.

Assorted Treats, as part of this year’s Art Month Sydney, features an impressive array of works on paper by the likes of Vernon Ah Kee, Fiona Hall, Chris O’Doherty (aka Reg Mombassa), Elisabeth Cummings, Euan Macleod, and more. Hop along on March 23 for the Artists’ Talks as part of the Leichhardt Open Studio Trail.

Also at this gallery during the Art Month is a hands-on printmaking workshop for the littler hands amongst us. The Kids’ program will run every Sunday in March and who knows, maybe your tot will be the next mini-Mombassa?

Until Mar 31, Art Est Art School and Gallery, 67 Lords St, Leichhardt, artmonthsydney.com.au
