Fresh off the heels of a sell out season in 2012, La Soiree returns to the Sydney Opera House in January 2013 for another round of shows.

Performances are an eclectic mix of cabaret, burlesque and circus that have previously impressed audiences in Australia, Paris, Germany and London.

One of the world’s pre-eminent exponents of the hula hoop, La Soiree performer Marawa promises the crowd will be treated to a unique experience.

“It won’t be like any other circus show they’ve seen before,” she said. “It’s a very unique show because all the acts are performed on a very small stage.

“The seating goes all the way round … you’re very close to the audience and can’t hide.”

After joining the show five years ago, Marawa will be making her debut at the Opera House. Her hula hoop act “involves up to 60 or 70 hoops”.

“It’s our own work,” Marawa said. “I think that’s really important to me, that I get to do what I want to do in my act.

“I put it together myself, I choose my music and my costumes and everything, so I feel like what I’m presenting is my own stuff.”

Other audience favourites include Captain Frodo, a contortionist with a penchant for manipulation of his body with the aid of a tennis racquet, The English Gents, skilled at balancing and acrobatics, and Nate Cooper, a Charlie Chaplin-inspired roller skating act.

Debuting in London in 2010, the show is typically performed on a small, round stage with a cast of around 25 performers. La Soiree was borne out of a previous cabaret show, La Clique, with the same creative director managing both shows in Brett Haylock.

Surprise appearances and new performers are also promised for the new year’s shows.

La Soiree will show at the Sydney Opera House from January 4 to February 10. Tickets from $65.
