I GET THE MUSIC IN YOU

Hold your horses people … theatre legend Queenie van de Zandt is bringing back her one-woman show with its star character, the infamous Jan van de Stool. The Dutch self-help guru first graced our stages in 2006 and since then has been compared with icons such as Reg Livermore and Barry Humphries, gone onto MC various charity events and developed a cult following on YouTube.

“I’ve tweaked bits of pieces but mostly it’s the same show. I figure if it’s not broken don’t fix it,” Zandt says. This satirical swipe at self-help follows a group of five students who turn up to Jan’s one-day course to sing about their troubles with men.

“I am a huge fan of self help. I’ve done so many different courses and read books and it has helped me enormously in my own life,” she explains. “But being a comedian at the same time when I am in these courses and doing crazy exercises … I [thought] if I worked this it would be hilarious.”

As a disclaimer: audiences should be aware that things could get a little messy. “I’ve had a lot of people write to me saying, ‘I cannot believe I actually weed a little bit in my undies.’ It’s a lovely thing to go to theatre and know you’re going to laugh yourself sick.”
