ABBE MAY

ABBE MAY

“I’m suffering from insomnia,” laments Western Australian musician Abbe May. Upon my recommendation that she visit a doctor or at least ‘Google’ her symptoms she responds “Never Google your symptoms or you’ll convince yourself you’re dying!” and suggests instead that it’s a product of her being so busy with the release of her latest single Karmageddon and the imminent promotional tour.

“We’re basically writing, recording and producing a live show. Not that I’m complaining but it’s lot of work.” Not content to tread old ground, Abbe has been creating a new show that represents the new musical direction she is moving in; one that takes her away from the rock chick persona she is known for and towards embracing electronic and synthesised forms of sound. Abbe is unapologetic for breaking any pre-conceptions about her musical style.

“I don’t want anybody to know what they’re getting when they get a CD of mine. I think the one thing we’ve really achieved with [Karmageddon] is that we haven’t repeated myself. We’re making music that inspires us and we’re trying to make something original too.” So while the final product still contains Abbe’s brooding vocal delivery, it pulsates with deep bass and eerie synths giving the listener a dark sense of foreboding.

So what can punters expect on her upcoming tour then?

“They can expect a set of moody electronica and doom-pop. If people are shocked by the direction of the new single they’re gonna be completely shocked by the live set. So they might as well come along.”
