Blue Martini
Image: The very name of this one filled me with horror. The reason for my discomfort occurred when I was a teenager, in the coastal town of Windang. Considering it wasn’t me who threw up, I’ve carried this aversion too long. Regardless, I still shudder slightly at the vivid blue neon on this otherwise stately suburban street.

The very name of this one filled me with horror. The reason for my discomfort occurred when I was a teenager, in the coastal town of Windang. Considering it wasn’t me who threw up, I’ve carried this aversion too long. Regardless, I still shudder slightly at the vivid blue neon on this otherwise stately suburban street. I enter an unapologetically modern space. The crowd makes Drummoyne look like the new Glebe, just with added parking. Duly noting a giggling, girlish gaggle bonding over luminous blue glasses, I still reach for a different updated retro – the Colada Martini ($15). One really shouldn’t prejudge. Gun mixologist Grant Collins (responsible for much of the list) breathes new life into a drink I’d usually only order on island holidays. It’d taste even sweeter for seven bucks if I’d arrived (any night) before seven.  That said, booze here is well priced even without a discount. The eminently drinkable 2010 Alkoomi Chardonnay ($30/bottle) makes a fine seafood companion through a set of Seared Scallops, Green Apples and Celeriac ($15) followed by a fresh and contemporary, two-person Grilled Seafood Plate ($52). My standout dish was the Grilled Quail with Carrot Puree, Cous Cous and Piri Piri ($15) – and there I was thinking that foams were nearly dead.
