What we’ve got our heart set on this Art Month …

The third annual Art Month kicked off last week with a lavish launch at Carriageworks, marking the first event in the month-long festival. Bringing you a vibrant and diverse mix of shows, events, talks and parties, Art Month promises an explosion of local culture involving some 300 artists, 200 events, and 100 galleries. Sound overwhelming? Check out Scene’s Top Ten to help you navigate the plethora of arty shindigs going down.

Precinct Parties: every Thursday and Friday night a gallery will play host to an art bar, to settle into after a tour of local spaces. First cab off the ranks is Paddington/Woollhara on March 8th, followed by Rozelle on the 9th, Waterloo/Alexandria on 15th, Darlinghurst on the 16th, Chippendale/Redfern on the 22nd, and finishing up in Surry Hills on the 23rd.

Art Cycle: returning by popular demand, Art Cycle sees art lovers grab their bikes and set off on a whirlwind tour of various districts. The first cycle, kicking off March 3rd at Newtown Square, will take revellers the arty streets of the Inner West.

Unseen Sculptures: catch a glimpse of the unseen with dLux Media Arts’ tours of Warren Armstrong’s futuristic Augmented Reality sculptures, only visible utilising smart phone technology. The tours run on March 10th, 17th, 24th, and 31st, and are guided by Armstrong.

Uncollectable Art: head along to Fraser Studios on March 11th to catch some of Australia’s most uncollectable artists talking about why they make uncollectible work, what it means to operate outside commercial practices, and the role of artist-run initiatives in their work.

Roslyn Oxley9: is featuring a number of heavyweight exhibitions throughout the month including Tony Clark, Wim Delvoyne, Daniel Boyd and Julie Rrap, all of whom blur the boundaries of traditional painting and forms.

Artbank Open Day: catch a rare glimpse into one of the most dynamic art collections Australia has to offer, as Art Bank throws its doors open the public on March 10th.

John Kaldor in Conversation: one of Australia’s most prolific and dedicated collectors, patrons, and supporters of contemporary art, John Kaldor has pushed the limits of Australian art for over forty years. Hear him reflect in conversation with Fenella Kernebone.

Artist Workshop & 2-course dinner: NG Gallery host a night of paper art creation and an exclusive menu created by David Walker, featuring two sumptuous courses at Mission including a glass of wine. March 28th, tickets are $125.

Wonderful Weekend Workshops: Spanning the whole month, various workshops will give punters the chance to create their own art. From wearable art to drawing and painting (both March 4th), paper cutting to sketch club (March 10th), edible storytelling to Korean Hanji (March 17th), and video to mobile photography (March 24/25th), the workshops will appeal to the artist in all of us.

Serial Space Suitcase Market: ARIs and art students fill a suitcase and hock their wares in an outdoor market at Chippendale’s Serial Space gallery. Come grab a wild and whacky bargain. Going down March 17th.
