PICTURA AUSTRALIANA

PICTURA AUSTRALIANA

Pictura Australiana is a smaller group show than the gala events Tortuga is known for,” curator and artist Hellen Morgan-Harris remarks. “That said, the show will feature the work of 13 artists, two VJs, DJs, a performance artist and live music from the Slowburners.”

This latest show from the St Peters studios, home to some 15 residents, pays homage to the Young British Artist movement of the 90s, giving it an Australian twist.

“The YBA artists reference typically British ‘everyday’ or kitchen-sink realism and we felt there was a place to attune this concept to an Australian perspective. Rather than revitalising or reinterpreting the YBA work, the show is referencing the movement and identifying with the basic tenet behind its self-funded independence,” Morgan-Harris says.

“The YBA scene was typified by conversation and cross-fertilisation between artists and this is something we relate to. Ours is a collaborative effort and much of the work is created by collaboration. So, we relate to the brash unapologetic boldness of the YBA scene, a scene in which emergent artists who saw no future for themselves within the traditional gallery model created their own independently organised and funded events to exhibit their work. Often in warehouses or abandoned buildings which in turn influenced the work. It’s very DIY.”
