Spears satire hits Seymour Centre

A satirical cabaret rendition of Britney Spears’s rollercoaster life is captivating audiences at the Seymour Centre.

Britney Spears: The Cabaret, on stage until Saturday, February 25, stars Christie Whelan (pictured) as Britney Spears in a role tailored to her talents by award-winning director Dean Bryant.

Ms Spears’s life will be told through her pop music hits as reinvented by Musical Director, Matthew Frank.

The satire which had a brief Sydney stint in 2009 aims to make audiences laugh and sympathise with Ms Spears. This formula resulted in two sell-out seasons in Adelaide and Melbourne.

Producer Richard Carroll, of Luckiest Productions, said: “The audiences come expecting to laugh – and they do – but the most common reaction afterwards is surprise at how much the show made them sympathise with Britney.”

The show really makes you question how we treat celebrities…what is it really like for the girl who lives through it all in the glare of the media spotlight?”

Christie Whelan’s starring role as Ms Spears is also attracting audiences. “It is a one-woman show, and was written especially for Christie … she feels at home in the role,” Mr Carroll said.

Director Dean Bryant developed a role for Ms Whelan that matched her talents, allowing her to perform at her peak.

“[The role] shows off all of her talents,” he said.
