HEIDRUN LOHR: PARALLAX

Since its inception, performance art has grappled with documentation. Whatever your opinion on the worth or possibility of capturing live art, one thing artists and audiences agree on is that performance is a notoriously tricky thing to capture.

Photographer Heidrun Lohr has been perfecting this elusive art for over 20 years, and is one of those rare artists able to capture the power of performance in a single image. Lohr acknowledges the challenges of her subject. “To translate the essence of a performance into the two-dimensionality of a photograph which is captivating and alive and even sneaks its way into the memory of an audience, that is the challenge!”

Opening at the Australian Centre for Photography on March 3rd, Lohr’s latest show features a selection of work spanning her diverse career. “Its a selection of images from my archive that intends to bring to the attention of a wider audience the power of performance photographs as an interpretation of this most ephemeral art, whether its theatre, dance or performance”, says Lohr.

“For me, movement is life, and I am endlessly fascinated how performers move through space and time and how light reflected creates the image […] All the images that made it finally into the show are in a way special. They reveal something by arresting a movement that the human eye usually does not catch in real time.”
