THE MERRY WIDOW

THE MERRY WIDOW

Originally created for The Australian Ballet in 1975, the latest production of The Merry Widow has a nostalgic poignancy. It’s a revival in every sense of the word – the lavish original costumes designed by Desmond Heeley have been restored; the company dance the same choreography by Ronald Hynd as was danced in 1975; and John Meehan and Marilyn Rowe, the first Danilo and his merry widow,  coached the new generation of dancers to help stage this theatrical comeback.

Set in Belle Époque Paris, the story is brimming with illicit love affairs, passionate embraces, clumsy barons, opulent balls, waltzes and cancans, and scheming politicians – but the showstoppers are the
breathtaking sets and amazing costumes, especially the white feathered ‘chook dress’ that steals the show in Act III. Lana Jones sparkles as flirtatious Valencienne and Amber Scott is flawless as merry widow Hanna.

The Merry Widow will charm even the most reluctant audience. This is captivating ballet.
