MELODIE NELSON – MEDITATIONS ON THE SUN

Sydney based indie folk popstress Lia Tsamoglou aka Melodie Nelson has been doing the rounds on the local live circuit for some time now with her group Moonmilk and as a solo performer and finally her album Meditations On The Sun has dropped. The album opener Waiting kicks off ambitiously with soaring vocal harmonies, lush synths, violins and guitar swells and the sonic tone of the album is set. The track Orpheus, She’s Gone is so dreamy it feels as though the listener is being whisked away on a cloud, Tonight is more of a doo-whop number and Colours Of My Dreams suggests that Melodie Nelson gets inspiration from artists such as PJ Harvey and Nick Cave. Meditations On The Sun is sublimely recorded and the album flows beautifully from track to track however it’s almost too one dimensional in the sense that the album just doesn’t seem to go anywhere. It feels as though the album bubbles and occasionally simmers but never does it reach boiling point. She’s definitely an artist to watch though and it’ll be interesting to see what comes next.
