East Sydney food and drink wins praise

From Surry Hills to Bronte, East Sydney scooped up a hand-full of accolades in the announcement of the Good Food Guide winners earlier this week.

Sydney’s beach strip now officially hosts the best breakfast and the best view with Iceberg’s Dining Room and Bar in Bondi and Three Blue Ducks in Bronte winning respectively.

Closer to the centre, the grub and drink of East Sydney brought in awards for Gardel Bar in Surry Hills for best bar and Four in Hand in Paddington for best pub.

Nearby Gastropark whose fun-inspired food in Potts Point has been making more than a few murmurs in the food world got a critical hand-up to the acclaimed two-hat category.

The Good Food Guide was released on Tuesday and is available in bookstores and electronically.

Disabled services on show at Martin Place

On Monday John Tassone lived in a giant Perspex box in Martin Place hoping to show the world that aged care was no place for young people.

Mr Tassone is just one of the many young disabled in Australia who live in aged care facilities because of the lack of support services for people his age.

His two hours in the box was a little compromise to express the reality of the young people living in aged care 44 per cent receive visits from friends less than once a year and 21 per cent go outside the facility less than once a month.

The average age where they live is 86 and the life expectancy is three years.

Youngcare’s CEO Marina Vit said: “It really is ridiculous that in this day and age, 6,500 young Australians are living in aged care simply because there are few other options.”

Harris Community Centre responds with flashy brochure

The Uniting Care Harris Community Centre has responded to community criticism by releasing a comprehensive eight page brochure.

The brochure includes details of what services the community centre will provide and includes a profile of the new manager Sharon Wozniak and details of the centre’s new community advisory council.

Uniting Care has come under recent criticism for three staff entrenchments including long term manager Lorrain Findlay, which caused many local residents to raise concerns over Uniting Care’s ability to continue the same level of community service.

Nominations for the advisory panel close on Friday.

For more information call the Centre on 9552 1140.
