CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS

CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS

Since first distinguishing ourselves from the Neanderthals, art has been a core part of human society; making manifest our consciousness and higher intelligence. The most ancient and striking examples of this creative urge were found in a cave long-sealed by a landslide, preserved in pristine conditions. Since its discovery, access to the Chauvel cave has been limited; very few people have seen the huge and stunningly adorned caverns. Until recently, when unprecedented access was granted to experimental filmmaker Werner Herzog for his latest documentary, Cave of Forgotten Dreams. The film is a breathtaking and inspirational journey through the caves, capturing the astounding images of horses, rhinos, handprints, and a particularly enigmatic anamorphic woman-bull. At the heart of the film is an exploration of what our artistic impulse means – the need to communicate, to preserve traces of our lives, to express our mysterious higher consciousness. Highly recommended. (KB) ****
