EMMYLOU HARRIS – HARD BARGAIN

EMMYLOU HARRIS – HARD BARGAIN

As its’ title suggests, the new album from Emmylou Harris is an album that reflects the current climate in America. But rather than focus on the present she has chosen to date many of the songs in events of the past, be it the recent tragedy – New Orleans – the timeless plight of the homeless – Home Sweet Home – or the civil rights struggles – My Name Is Emmett Till. While Hard Bargain doesn’t hit like Red Dirt Girl or Wrecking Ball, it does continue Harris’ evolution from interpreter of songs to songwriter. It took her 20 years to have faith in her own tunes, but she now knows that her simple, unforced words and fine ear for melody compares with the best. The mood here may be reflective, but Emmylou’s strength is her ability to avoid maudlin or melodrama and instead tell honest tales of everyday. Hard Bargain is one of those albums that will sit in your collection for years, it wont immediately astound, but it will be one that you will reach for regularly.
