SONG FWAA – LIGETI’S GOAT

Ligeti’s Goat is the debut album by Jazz trio Song Fwaa. The group consists of three talented musicians slash improvisers: Martin Kay (alto sax) who has played with Shirley Bassey, James Morrison, Kenny Rogers, Tim Minchin, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra; David Reaston  (guitar) who is leader of the 10 Guitar Project and teaches guitar and improvisation at the Australian Institute of Music; and Jamie Cameron (drums) who amongst others has played with Sean Wayland, Elana Stone, Steve McKenna, and Greta Gertler. This 13-track album is fairly diverse with a mix of songs that are quite chaotic with loud manic instruments overlapping each other creating an almost messy feeling and then some softer and prettier moments. Overall it’s experimental, and kooky, for example, the opening song which goes for nearly 11 minutes is titled Ligeti’s Goat and is said to be: “a serial epic exploring the eating cycles of a goat”. You won’t want to listen to this if you’re tired, sick or hungover because you’re brain might explode.
