Follow the cool cats into a New Orleans inspired neo-diner, dishing up deconstructed and exciting modern American cuisine. Owner/Chef Dan McGuirt’s fine dining experience at Melbourne’s Vue du Monde stands him in good stead with the menu that takes as its starting point traditional diner food. As well as the requisite burgers and sliders (mini-burgers) you’ll find a texturally exciting bowl of New England Clam Chowder ($15) jazzed up by celery and bacon powders and thyme oil; and a cute quartet of Creole Starters ($16) that includes a smoky seafood jambalaya, a baby tureen of French onion soup, a fried Pacific oyster and a fragrant banana milkshake. Have your own Jackie Brown moment with a plate of Chicken and Waffles ($16) inspired by Roscoe’s and lifted by chilli ‘caviar’. Try your first cheesy grits under tender Coca Cola Braised Beef Short Ribs ($22). Dan cleverly leaves the bargain priced gooey Banana Cream Pie ($6) intact – there’s no need to deconstruct something us Aussies have barely eaten! The apropos art deco setting has all the touches – table rails, classic jazz movies on tiny table-side screens and a retro diner uniform on a fabulously appropriate waitress who left Kansas City for love. Dawwww!
